A cigarette box is a sturdy wooden container used to store a few handfuls of cigarettes and thereby prevent them from being destroyed. A common cigarette box is usually a flat lid that easily opens into two halves. Each half contains a row of cigarettes, generally held securely in place either by an elastic or spring band. A pack of cigarettes can be kept inside for years and generations to come.
Cigarette boxes are usually made from wood, but can also be manufactured from metal, plastic, or any other material. They are designed so that the cigars can be inserted as they are supposed to be, in an upright position. Cigars are kept wrapped in paper or tissue at the bottom of the box in a sealed-off manner so as not to allow them to be burned, or destroyed when they are placed in the upright position.
On the other hand, when they are placed on the side of the cigarette box in an upright position, a cigarette holder may be provided for keeping the cigars in a closed position. The horizontal tracks on the cigarette holders are designed in such a way that the cigars cannot fall out, or slip off, on the side of the holder. However, the horizontal tracks may be designed in such a way that they allow the cigars to fall out on the horizontal surfaces of the trunnion. In this instance, the trunnions may be provided with hinges or handles, so as to enable them to fall out in the open position.
Cigarette boxes are generally constructed from either wood or metal. Both materials are sturdy and durable, and both types are relatively inexpensive. In addition, both can be painted any color desired. Wood and metal constructions of cigarette cases can often be found in the form of carved designs. These types are very ornate, and often have additional embellishments such as stones or semi-precious stones set into them.
There are two kinds of cigarette box designs that we will discuss. One has an open-top box having hinged end walls thereof, and another has a closed-top box having horizontal tracks on the end walls thereof. With the open-top design, the cigars could be smoked in any location, even out of doors, and with the closed design, only cigars could be smoked in an enclosed container. No other items, like lighters, are allowed.
Of course, not all cigarette cases are allowed in the United States. Cigars that are not made in the united states are labeled as tobacco products, and are strictly prohibited from being imported into the country. Additionally, cigarette cases which have a glass or mirrored surfaces are strictly prohibited. These products are imported from overseas countries, and the restrictions against smoking in the country do not extend to them.
